Formula E has wrapped up its exciting first season!
I think the questions we’re all dying to know is; who performed the best in this new all electric racing generation? Does this heavily reflect on the technology of the company they represent?
Of note is the fact that due to it being the first season of electric racing, several restrictions were placed upon the vehicles’ technology. However, Formula E has now been able to approve several upgraded rules for the 2nd season (see Wikipedia-Formula E Rule Changes). With that said, Audi had a minor battery overheating problem in Moscow. Andretti’s team also had a mechanical problem in Punta Del Este, but they were able to pull out of it and place 2nd in Long Beach and Miami.
The Renault team won the most, scoring 1st place in 4 out of 11 races. Overall, Renault had a strong lead in 1st, followed by Dragon and Audi in 2nd and 3rd. NEXTEV and Virgin placed 4th and 5th.
Sebastian Buemi of Renault scored many victories, including 3 wins and 2nd place in Berlin. However, the standout driving performance goes to Nelson Piquet of NEXTEV. Though he won 2 out of the 11 races, his driving was smooth, consistent (he placed in nearly every race) and often earned the ‘fastest lap’, giving him an overall driver standing of 144 (1 point higher than Buemi).
This has been an exciting, history making season and a smooth introduction to electric racing. With the expanded freedom placed upon the manufacturers for the second season, we will be better able to see which teams excel beyond. We’re all looking forward to what the next season will bring!
