Polestar – Volvo’s New Favorite Child
Polestar has been around for more than twenty years as a high performance division of Volvo, but now its reinventing itself to meet the demand for electric cars. Volvo states it is, “a new separately branded electrified global high performance car company.” The Polestar brand is expected to devote itself completely to electric cars by 2019. So what irons does it currently have in the fire?
Polestar 1
The Polestar 1 is a two door plugin hybrid. It is functioning as a crucial link between the previous gas market and the emerging electric market. Though this model is currently hybrid, future models are expected to be all electric. The coupe comes with 591bhp, 728lb ft of torque, all wheel drive and a 0-60mph in around 3 seconds. It will travel 93 miles on a single charge, without having to use the gas engine.
Polestar 2
The Polestar 2 is an all electric four door sedan that is being engineered to compete with the Tesla Model 3. It is expected to have a starting price of around $45-50,000 and a 310 mile range. The Polestar 2 will launch in 2020.
Polestar 3
The Polestar 3 is an SUV that is set to launch in 2022. Polestar is aiming at a 310mi range for this larger vehicle. Chief operating officer Jonathan Goodman says; “The Polestar 3 will be a coupe-style SUV and it’s not our plan to do a re-skinned XC90 or anything like that. The XC90 is very much a Volvo car, the Polestar 3 will be about drivability, it’ll be about design and about offering something different.”
The Future of Polestar
The Polestar 1 is set for production in 2019. Once again, though it will be a hybrid version of the Polestar 1, all subsequent vehicles are expected to be electric. We look forward to all that this focused all electric brand will bring to an all electric world scene.
