The 2016 Chevy Volt will be in dealerships towards the middle to end of next year, but no price has been stated as of yet. It has long been the goal of Chevrolet to continually lower the price of the Volt as production increases and battery prices fall, so perhaps we can expect a lower price than the Chevy Volt’s starting price of $34,995.
For 2016, the Chevy Volt has undergone an extensive remodel. There is still only one body style, but option packages offer leather seats, electronic driver aids, a navigation system and many more interior and add on features.
The new Volt consists of dual electric motors, as opposed to the single motor in previous years. There is also a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine, which runs on regular unleaded now, that serves as a generator to charge the Volt’s lithium-ion batteries once their initial charge has been depleted.
Although the number of battery cells has been reduced, the total battery capacity has increased overall. The MPGs have also increased from 37 to 41, bringing the electric efficiency rating up by four points to 102 MPGe.
The new Volt still outputs 149hp, but does so with 12% more efficiency. Chevy claims that the 2016 Volt can now accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. The combined driving electric range now extends to a maximum of 50 miles and the total distance the Volt can travel on a full tank of gasoline has increased by 40 miles.
Charging has become more convenient as well. The 2016 Chevy Volt comes with a slimmer, more easily stored, charging cord and a GPS-based charging strategy which automatically initiates charging when the Volt is plugged in at a charging station.
