Formula E – EV Racing is Prepping For The 2014 Season

Formula E in Bahrain

The Formula E race teams travel to Bahrain this week to continue their preparations for the 2014 season.
The idea of an all electric racing team could easily be viewed as, well, a clean slate.  Never before 2013 has a racing team consisted of all electric vehicles and the technology involved in electric cars is so new, we may well find ourselves in a fascinating racing era reminiscent of the 1950’s and 60’s. We look forward to guiding you through the highlights of this year’s Formula E season! The team recently prepared for the 2014 season in Jerez where all the teams received experience with a very different set of technical regulations. They then moved on to Spain and now they’re testing these EVs out in the heat of the desert in Bahrain. While in Spain, Mercedes and Ferarri fared well, whereas Red Bull needed to work out a few power unit issues. The Lotus E22 looks to have done well, after doling out a no show at Jerez, so we’re waiting to see what the future holds for this much anticipated E22 model. The Mercedes team looked particularly strong in Spain.  Nico Rosberg was even able to complete a trouble-free race simulation run. Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, Williams, Sauber and Force India were able to run their EVs in Jerez with far fewer problems than the Renault runners. Though they are sure to encounter other problems, they head to Bahrain having collected and worked with more data than Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Caterham and Marussia, which puts them somewhat ahead of the curve.Pirelli’s 2014 tyres, which feature new compounds and constructions, will be extensively reviewed in Bahrain where the heat of the desert will produce optimal conditions for thorough testing.Due to the innovative nature of these races, we will surely see many upgrades and ‘trial and error’ shifts to these vehicles. This will surely add to the excitement of racing fans! Every race will bring it’s own surprises and the competitive order may shift drastically.Bahrain’s two pre-season tests run from February 19-22 and from February 27 – March 2. The 1st race of 2014 is March 14-16th in Australia.
