Mercedes Joins Formula E, Quits DTM’s Gas Powered Race

Mercedes Joins Formula E in 2019

Mercedes joins Formula E in the sixth season, 2019/2020. They are leaving the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) race in favor of focusing purely on Formula E.

This is a bold move for Mercedes Benz, but they firmly believe their electric line is of the utmost importance. Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes Benz Motorsport says; “Electrification will play a major role in the future of the automotive industry.” Many automotive leaders are in agreement and brands like Jaguar, Renault and Audi are already racing in Formula E.

Mercedes’ news comes just after Volvo announces their plan to go all electric in 2019. The shift to electric seems to be swift as more and more car manufacturers are getting onboard. Even Toyota, who seemed sidetracked by hydrogen fuel cell technology, has come around and publicized plans for EV production.
